Job Introduction
Correspondence Officer
West of England Mayoral Combined Authority
Location: Bristol / Hybrid Working Available
Are you a highly organised communicator with a sharp eye for detail and a passion for public service? The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority is seeking a professional and proactive Correspondence Officer to support the Mayor and the communications team in managing high-volume correspondence and ensuring timely, high-quality responses to a wide range of public, political, and stakeholder enquiries.
This is a key role at the heart of regional government — an opportunity to support the Mayor directly by ensuring that all correspondence reflects our strategic priorities, tone of voice, and commitment to clear, accurate public communication.
About the Role
You will lead the coordination and management of incoming correspondence to the Mayor and the Combined Authority, ensuring responses are accurate, timely, and aligned with the Mayor’s position. Working closely with officers across all directorates, you will commission information, draft replies, and oversee the end-to-end correspondence process.
In addition to correspondence management, you will play a vital role in supporting Mayoral engagements and corporate events — contributing to the preparation and smooth delivery of key public appearances and visits.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Mayor’s Correspondence System, ensuring timely and accurate responses to enquiries from the public, campaign groups, political figures, media, and other stakeholders.
- Draft professional correspondence on behalf of the Mayor, reflecting policy positions and communication standards.
- Collaborate across the organisation to commission input and ensure responses are well-informed and up-to-date.
- Monitor and track response times, maintaining compliance with performance targets.
- Manage the corporate communications mailbox, responding to or coordinating replies to partner, media, and internal queries.
- Support the planning and logistics for Mayoral visits, events, and stakeholder engagements.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a confident communicator with a deep understanding of the political and public service landscape. The ideal candidate will be:
- Organised and Methodical: Able to manage high volumes of correspondence and multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Collaborative: Skilled in building productive relationships across diverse teams and stakeholder groups.
- Politically Astute: Comfortable working in a sensitive political environment, with sound judgment and discretion.
- An Excellent Communicator: Demonstrated ability to write for a public audience and distil complex information into clear, accessible language.
Essential Criteria
- Experience working in or alongside national, regional, or local government, ideally supporting elected representatives.
- Strong writing skills with experience drafting responses for public or political audiences.
- Knowledge of public policy and how it influences local and regional governance.
- Proven experience managing correspondence and using systems to track and coordinate responses.
- Excellent IT skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to adapt quickly to new platforms.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with the work of the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
- Experience using correspondence management tools such as Caseworker.mp.
The interviews are planned to be held on the week commencing 14th July 2025. Please note this may be subject to change.
The closing date for this role is 4th July 2025.
