Job Introduction
Make your analysis count. Shape the future of the West of England.
This is an opportunity to do more than analyse numbers. As an Investment Analyst at the West of England Combined Authority, you’ll help shape investment decisions that have a tangible impact on businesses, communities and the region’s future economy.
You’ll be at the heart of major investment decisions — testing business cases, challenging assumptions, identifying opportunities and providing the evidence that helps senior leaders decide where significant public investment should go.
You’ll work across a diverse portfolio of projects and sectors, collaborating with local authorities, government, universities and private-sector partners. Your analysis will help turn ambitious ideas into investable, deliverable projects.
Why this role?
- Influence decisions that matter – your analysis will directly inform funding approvals, investment priorities and recommendations to senior decision-makers.
- Work on meaningful projects – you’ll assess investments designed to drive economic growth, innovation, infrastructure and opportunity across the West of England.
- Get close to the decision-making – you’ll work with senior leaders and investment panels, seeing how your analysis translates into real-world action.
- Build breadth and expertise – work across different sectors, investment proposals and complex multi-partner programmes rather than focusing on a single portfolio.
- Develop your commercial judgement – you’ll have the opportunity to challenge assumptions, weigh risk and make recommendations where the evidence isn’t always straightforward.
You’ll get the chance to work at the intersection of public and private investment and to be part of something bigger – help shape the economic future of one of the UK’s most dynamic and ambitious regions.
What you’ll do
- Appraise complex, multi-million-pound investment proposals and business cases
- Build financial models, economic assessments and sensitivity analysis
- Assess value for money, strategic fit, risk and deliverability
- Turn complex analysis into clear, compelling recommendations for senior leaders and decision-makers
- Monitor investment performance, outcomes, spend and risk
- Help develop the region’s investment pipeline and identify emerging opportunities
- Work with project sponsors and partners to strengthen proposals and ensure they meet assurance requirements
What you’ll bring
You’ll have a degree in finance, economics, business, mathematics or a related discipline, strong analytical and financial modelling skills, and advanced Excel capability.
You’ll be comfortable working with complex information, challenging evidence and exercising professional judgement. Just as importantly, you’ll be able to turn your analysis into clear, confident advice that senior, non-technical audiences can act on.
Knowledge of HM Treasury Green Book principles, public-sector investment appraisal or assurance frameworks is highly desirable. CFA, CISI, CII or equivalent investment qualifications would be a bonus.
